freirad Freies Radio Innsbruck is a free radio station based in Innsbruck. It transmits on the FM frequencies 105.9 MHz, 106.2 MHz and 89.6 MHz. Since in 1991 (in contrast to all other European countries) no legal possibilities for non-state radios had been created, formed in the entire federal territory pirate radio stations . At this time, the pirate radio station Radio Radiator was heard irregularly in Innsbruck. Soon the activists began trying to put their right to free speech in the ether on a meaningful legal basis. Members of Radio Radiator teamed up with the activists of the other pirate radio stations in Austria and founded the Pressure-group Freies Radio. In 1993, the radiator activists organized as a club Freirad for a regional radio license. When it was rejected, Freirad 105.9 filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court , which was granted. In 1997, an amendment of the Regional Radio Law and Freewheel 105.9 filed a further application for a radio license (this time a local radio license for Greater Innsbruck). Unlike in all other federal states, all licenses in Tyrol were granted to purely commercial radios. Following the rejection of the license application for a local radio license for the Innsbruck area, Freirad registered with the private broadcasting authority an urgent need for an additional license in Innsbruck. In October 1999 Freirad sent for the first time, initially only in the context of a limited to two weeks, event radio license '. The interest of the program makers in this radio was so great that after just a few days almost 24 hours a day with in-house productions could be sent. About 150 people designed a diverse program. In the year 2000 the license found by Freirad in the context of the event radio license came to the advertisement as further local radio license for Innsbruck. The selection process ended in December 2001 with the licensing of 10 years of free-wheeling. Since July 2002 Freirad 105.9 is audible on the FM frequency 105.9 MHz from Zirl to Schwaz to Matrei.
