Östra Småland and the News , called Östran, is a Swedish social-democratic newspaper in Kalmar with coverage area in southern Kalmar County. In Oskarshamn municipality, a local edition is given under the name Nyheterna ut. The distribution area of the news is the northern part of Kalmar County. The newspaper was part of the A-Press until the bankruptcy in 1992. Since the reconstruction of the same year, the newspaper was entirely owned by Sweden's Social Democratic Labor Party. Since 2011, the company is owned by Gota Media (91 percent) and Östra Småland Intressenter AB (9 percent). Chairman of Östra Småland AB is Bennie Ohlsson. Chief editor and responsible publisher is Gunilla Persson. Among former chief editors are Jan G Andersson, Berndt Ahlqvist and Lars Engqvist.
