Radio X is an alternative rock music station from Global.The station originally launched as Xfm in 1992 as a series of short term RSLs in the Camden area of north London. In 1996, Xfm was awarded the final London wide FM licence, beating Capital Gold.Xfm launched on 1st September 1997, the day after Princess Diana's death, which led to a low key launch, which didn't help ratings, however the independent era of the station helped launched the careers of Ricky Gervais who was the Head of Speech and his assistant Stephen Merchant who went on to write The Office and Extras for BBC Two.
