Schamper

Schamper is the official and independent student magazine of Ghent University. It can be consulted online and can be downloaded free of charge in paper form in all student restaurants, homes and faculties of the university. The magazine is published every two weeks on an edition of 4000 copies, except during holidays and block periods. On the website, daily news since December 2007 is continuously provided. Founder Koen Raeschose the name 'Schamper' because the word could not be adequately translated in any language: a rebellious characteristic of the post-68 years at the universities. With the support of the then University of Ghent, the first three chief editors (Koen Raes, Rik Van Nuffel and Frank Goetmaeckers) regularly caused a stir with the publication of abortion addresses (abortion was then still illegal in Belgium), the participation in free radios (idem) and critical reporting about the university. The goodwill and support of the university dropped to a freezing point with the publication of a cartoon about the pope, after which the (Catholic) rector Cottenie placed the editors under guardianship at the end of the 1980s. With less financial resources and an editorial line that was less confrontational, the impact of the magazine declined. The frequency decreased to two-weekly. The magazine began to look more and more like a magazine. The subtitle also changed: from "Schamper, the magazine of the intellual (sic)" to "Schamper, press fresh student magazine for the RUG", to the current "Schamper, the sheet of paper". A book has been published about the history of Schamper: "400 Schampers in word and image", written by Maarten De Gendt, a former editor.
