Established in 1844, the Spirit today is a vibrant, locally owned newspaper committed to quality, local journalism.
Since 2011, our editorial staff has been led by Robert Snyder, a longtime Eastern Panhandle resident who has worked as a reporter, editor and editorial cartoonist at The Sun of Baltimore, the Frederick News-Post in Maryland, The Journal in Martinsburg and other papers.
In 2012, for the first time ever, the Spirit won the second-place General Excellence award by the West Virginia Press Association. The Spirit also won General Excellence awards in 2013 and 2014.
The Spirit's small but hard-working staff covers news and happenings in Jefferson and Berkeley counties. Each edition includes a all-local Life section with features, things to do, recipes and more. Snyder's lively editorial section delivers a mix of local viewpoints. Also count on the Spirit for local business news, police calls, property transfers, weddings, engagements, obituaries and other important events.
The Spirit is published every Wednesday, 52 weeks a year.
