Striving is a cultural-social magazine from Flanders that focuses on essayistics. It appears monthly and provides a platform for critical reflection on developments in various fields, from philosophy to film, from law to art, from theology to economics. It deliberately offers a counterbalance to the speed in the popular media and is intended for the reader who prefers not to be immediately but well thought through with current developments. Striving does not focus on an audience of a certain age or denomination, but on a 'generation that has the mind', on persons with a desire for inspired deepening. The magazine was founded in 1933 by the Jesuit Frans De Raedemaeker. The aim is to include a Forum section for opinion pieces, a Podium section for articles on art and literature, and a series of book reviews in each issue. Every year the magazine holds an essay competition for beginning essayists and publishes a themed issue.
