Tessiner Zeitung is the only German-language newspaper published in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. The newspaper was founded in 1908 by Locarnes publisher Pietro Giugno. At first, the newspaper saw itself as the organ of the approximately 6,000 German-speaking Swiss in Ticino, most of the employees of the Gotthard railway, and accused the Ticino of being "foreign-minded", which led to some upset. After the First World War, Hermann Allen, editor of the Ticino newspaper from 1913 to 1915, launched it in 1921 under the name of southern Switzerland. Allen was until 1923 and again from 1935 to 1939 editor of the newspaper.
