National Geographic Magazine , later abbreviated as National Geographic , is a non- profit entity that functions as the official expression organ of the National Geographic Society of the United States . Its first edition dates from October 1888, nine months after the company was founded. This publication was identified almost immediately by its characteristic yellow stripe on the cover.
