Well-known artist and calligrapher from the Emirates, Mohammed Mandi exhibits his artwork with a solo exhibition at the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum as he displays some of his finest works.
The show, titled Luminous Letters, exhibits over 60 artworks by Mandi, including a work wherein the artist has inscribed the word ‘Sharjah’ in 42 different forms.
Having been featured in architecture as part of the interior design of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, and marble murals at Umm Al Emarat Park, Mandi has been showcasing his calligraphy designs and paintings at commercial and cultural spaces since the late 1990s.
Mandi ventured into the visual art form in 1975 and his various styles of calligraphy include Thuluth, Naskh, Diwani, and Jeli Diwan.
The exhibition at the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum showcases the artist’s decades-long career, from his studies at the Arabic Calligraphy Improvement School in Cairo to his training under renowned Turkish calligrapher Hassan Chalabi in the 1970s.
As calligraphy is an integral of Arab culture, the exhibition aims to educate visitors about the importance of preserving this distinguished art form and passing it on to future generations via our children and family programmes.
Mohammed Mandi has also worked on various UAE government ministries and some of his script features in the passports of the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, and Yemen, as well as on banknotes of the UAE, Bahrain, and Syria.
The exhibition will be on display till December 4, 2021, at the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum.
