Selina Steinfield won Israel’s ‘Miss Holocaust Survivor’ pageant that was held in Israel this week.
It was an endearing moment for the 86-year-old Israeli citizen, Selina Steinfield who went on to win Israel’s ‘Miss Holocaust Survivor’ pageant that was held in Israel this week.
A survivor of mass captures and massacres of Jews as a child in Romania, she took home the winning title for this season.
An annual pageant for Holocaust survivors, the contest took place in Israel wherein 10 contestants competed for the title of ‘Miss Holocaust Survivor,’ which has been designed to honour women who survived the Nazi genocide.
Held at a museum in Jerusalem this year, the contest saw women in their 80s and 90s took part in the special pageant, meant to bring members of Israel’s rapidly diminishing population of Holocaust survivors some joy and recognition.
The women dressed in stylish attires and sashes were treated by professional makeup artists, hairdressers, just before they walked the ramp for the competition.
Sponsored by ‘Yad Ezer L’Haver, or ‘Helping Hand’, a local foundation that provides services to Holocaust survivors, the pageant was first held in 2018. However, it was cancelled in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
According to the organisers, the contest is a way of paying respect to the Jewish women who suffered the Holocaust and survived to rebuild their lives in Israel.
The winner, Steinfeld moved to Israel in 1948, married and raised three children. She also has seven grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, mentioned the organisers.
“I have no words to express my happiness,” said Steinfeld, adding that she had enjoyed the special day of pampering and that she hoped to lead the people of Israel to beauty and goodness.
