Mashable: Apple introduced the next iteration of CarPlay at WWDC 2022 in June, promising improved compatibility with in-car features like climate control and FM radio, as well as support for numerous displays across the dashboard, individualized settings, and more.
Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo, and others have all committed to bringing the next generation of the CarPlay experience to their vehicles, and Apple says we can expect to hear about the first ones in late 2023. Here are the five features that MacRumors says people are most looking forward to seeing in the new CarPlay.
The latest iteration of CarPlay will be accessible on all of a car's screens, ensuring a consistent experience between the infotainment system, the instrument cluster, and any other screens in the dashboard. According to Apple, CarPlay will be specifically designed for each new vehicle model's display.
Added to that, the new CarPlay interface will be able to communicate with the various gauges on a vehicle's dashboard, such as the speedometer, tachometer, odometer, fuel gauge, engine temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, and more. Apple says that drivers will have different options for how their instrument cluster looks and is set up, including brand-specific layouts.
With the new Apple CarPlay, you'll have direct access to the climate settings of your vehicle, including the ability to change the temperature of the air conditioning or heating system, the speed of the fan, and the status of the heated seats and steering wheel.
The new interface relies heavily on widgets, which display information such as the time, distance, fuel economy, upcoming events, weather, incoming calls, and the status of any HomeKit-enabled devices, such as garage doors. The widgets can also be viewed and navigated directly from the instrument panel.
In the next version of CarPlay, there will be a whole new radio app that will make it easy to control the FM radio in your car.
