Adding another feather to Emirate’s ever-growing cultural sector is the new The House of Artisans –a permanent exhibition that honours UAE artisans. The exhibit was launched recently in Abu Dhabi’s historic Qasr Al Hosn.

The exhibition which pays celebrates UAE’s artisans and their fine work was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed, Abu Dhabi’s Executive Council member and chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Office.

The concept for House of Artisans, a part of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi’s (DCT), aims to inspire, cultivate and showcase the modern experts of the UAE’s ancient artisanal activities and preserve the rich heritage of the region.

The House of Artisans will enable visitors a diverse range of UAE handicrafts while engaging demonstrations and examples of a contemporary feel. For example, Bedouin women in the UAE practised a traditional form of weaving called ‘Sadu’, which uses wool of camels, sheep and goats. They then incorporate intricate geometric designs that reflect both social identity as well as the surrounding environment. Other works such as Khoos, Talli and others will be on display at the house.

The House of Artisans will also showcase a range of sea crafts, including boat building that played an important role in helping develop trade relations across the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean.

Additionally, The House of Artisans will also run a series of workshops, courses and events that will raise awareness of the artistic and social values that have shaped Emirati identity. His Highness was also introduced to Abu Dhabi Crafts online platform, and the Abu Dhabi Register of Artisans.

The House of Artisans will also conduct numerous initiatives that aim to support UAE artisans, promoting their work and preserving the traditional crafts that are an intrinsic part of the UAE’s cultural identity.
