The first-of-its-kind AI driving hub will scan a motorist's skill to cut the risk of accidents.

Availability of digital resources like remote monitoring via smart control centres along with sophisticated surveillance, has enabled authorities in the UAE to ensure road safety, by enhancing the ability to respond to car crashes on time. Cameras on traffic lights were activated months back, to keep an eye on motorists who used their phone as they drive, while sensors on vehicles will be alerting the police in Dubai about car crashes, along with useful info for the rescue teams.

Around the same time, smart training mechanisms were launched to make sure that cab drivers are screened so that human error is reduced, and cameras were also installed in taxis to keep a check on reckless driving. To introduce similar precision while verifying the skills of residents who own private vehicles, a driving hub in Dubai has unveiled the first ever AI-backed evaluation system for motorists in the Emirati smart city.

Created by Dubai-based Location Solutions as a joint project with Slovenian firm AV Living Lab, the mechanism is not just aimed at monitoring drivers, but also makes sure that drivers can improve their abilities to cut down risks of an accident. Customised simulators will be deployed for evaluating existing drivers, as well as those who are new on the road.

Designed to work like a gaming console, the stimulator provides environments including the countryside, a highway and a terrain resembling the city. Through a 15 minute driving test, the device collects data, which is analysed via AI, to spot any scope for improvement.

Special glasses given to motorists track the movement of their eyes, while a medical grade watch also facilitates data collection about the driver's body during the test. The results of the evaluation are then used for creating a personalised training module to address specific issues for each individual.

The machine creates digital replicas of different areas in and around Dubai, to add more authenticity to the test, and to generate accurate results.
