Jordan's rich mosaic of historical and cultural sites extends far beyond its famous and much-talked-about attractions. These unknown and not-so-familiar gems offer visitors memorable experiences for a lifetime.
From sacred religious sites to architectural marvels, these hidden treasures also provide unique insights into the country's diverse heritage. Dr. Abdelrazzak Arabiyat, Managing Director of the Jordan Tourism Board, said: "While there are many world-famous attractions in Jordan, the country also offers exceptional insights into our heritage and cutlure through sites that are less explored. Each of these sites narrates a unique story that serves as a window to our past. We're seeing particular interest from regional travellers to sites such as As-Salt and the Baptism Site, which offer both cultural and spiritual significance. The cultural authenticity of these sites, combined with modern amenities and luxury accommodations nearby will provide visitors a memorable experience."
As-Salt: A Testament to Religious Harmony
The city of As-Salt, one of Jordan's UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases remarkable examples of late Ottoman architecture. The golden-hued limestone buildings, with their distinctive tall windows and domed roofs, tell the story of a place where different religions have coexisted harmoniously for centuries.
Visitors can also explore the city's historic core, where exceptional mansions built by wealthy merchant families in the late 19th century stand even today as testament to the city's former status as a regional trading hub.
There is more: authentic bazaars and traditional markets continue to be vibrant centers of community life, offering visitors a glimpse into daily Jordanian culture. The Al-Ain Plaza, surrounded by Ottoman-era buildings, serves as the heart of the city where locals gather and visitors can experience genuine Jordanian hospitality.
The Baptism Site: Walking in Sacred Footsteps
Known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan, this UNESCO World Heritage site holds immense religious significance. It features ancient Roman and Byzantine remains including churches, baptismal pools, and water systems that tell the story of early Christianity.
The area has been preserved to maintain its spiritual atmosphere, with modern facilities enabling visitors to experience the site's sacred nature. Religious pilgrims and cultural tourists alike can walk the same paths that have drawn visitors for two millennia, making it a uniquely moving experience regardless of one's faith.
Ajloun: Nature and History Intertwined
In northern Jordan, the Ajloun Forest Reserve offers a striking contrast to the country's desert landscapes. This verdant region, home to evergreen oak, pine, and wild pistachio trees, provides visitors with hiking trails and ecological experiences.
The medieval Ajloun Castle, built in the 12th century, is as a magnificent example of Islamic military architecture and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
The reserve's Soap House Trail offers visitors the opportunity to experience local traditions firsthand, including watching the ancient craft of olive soap making. The combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and living cultural traditions makes Ajloun a compelling destination for those seeking to experience Jordan's diverse landscape and heritage.
The Jordan Tourism Board has been actively promoting these sites as part of its strategy to showcase the country's diverse tourism offerings. "We're focusing on sustainable tourism development while enhancing our luxury tourism offerings," adds Dr. Arabiyat. "Our goal is to maintain authentic cultural experiences while meeting the evolving expectations of modern travelers."
These destinations represent just a part of Jordan's rich cultural heritage, each offering unique perspectives on the country's history and traditions. With enhanced infrastructure and connectivity, the sites are becoming increasingly accessible to visitors seeking authentic experiences beyond the traditional tourist trail.
