Dubai RailBus; What is it?
Touted as a project by the Dubai government which will ‘redefine urban mobility’, it was reviewed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, accompanied by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed reviewed this project while visiting the RTA’s stand at World Governments Summit.
The project is a key element in UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy. Built using 3D printing technologies and recyclable materials, the carriages weigh 7 tonnes and can hold up to 40 passengers. The carriages can reach speeds of up to 100 km/hr, and boast ambient lighting and onboard WiFi. The carriages are 11.5 metres in length and 2.65 metres wide. Each carriage will boast 22 seats. The carriages are said to lower operational costs by 20-30% when pitted against comparable models.
Official statement from the Dubai government says the RTA will conduct ‘technical studies’ and research to identify key locations within Dubai for pilot projects of the RailBus system. This project comes in as the RTA signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with American startup RAILBUS Inc. which plans on creating the first fully solar-powered public transit system. As of now, the project is still in its concept stage.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer briefed His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. His Execellency also shared his thoughts on the RailBus. "The project reflects RTA’s commitment to fostering public-private partnerships and supporting start-ups in developing next-generation autonomous transport systems. RailBus is solar-powered, highly efficient, and cost-effective, integrating with Dubai’s public transport network. It also enhances first and last-mile connectivity, ensuring safe, smooth, and sustainable travel for residents and visitors in urban areas."
