Tech driven development in the Middle East has also prompted erstwhile oil fueled economies to commit to emission cuts, through reduced used of fossil fuels. Apart from developing renewable resources, getting electric mobility on track in cities will play a major part in achieving a cleaner environment.

Emirati cities are testing self-driving electric shuttles and also developing quick charging mechanisms to empower commuters and promote electric cars among motorists. With Dubai being at the forefront of UAE's tech transition, its power and water authority has launched an initiative to reward e-vehicle owners with free charging for an entire year.

The announcement was made as part of DEWA's strategy to promote ev ownership, which also involves quick and convenient charging services via QR codes. The offerings will be rolled out at over 300 charging points, which can be located on leading map apps in addition to DEWA's smart app.

Before the move to incentivise electric vehicle adoption was introduced, Dubai's transport authority had already launched free parking for Emirati e-wagons till 2022. DEWA has also developed its own patented charging systems which have plugs that can adapt to all kinds of electric cars.

All transactions from registrations for the EV Green Charger initiative to information exchange will be carried out via blockchain, hence ensuring data security. The free charging service will be available only for non-commercial vehicles.

Apart from government-backed initiatives, online platforms have also been created to guide people through the process, right from from buying to ownership and maintenance of electric vehicles. An app called EV Lab provides information on all EV brands in the Emirates, and also alerts drivers about location of nearest charging stations when they are running low on battery.

The app has also connected e-car owners in the city by launching UAE's first cars and coffee community, in a bid to create a community for enhancing the ev ownership experience.
