Google marked the 15th anniversary of its massive and highly contentious endeavor to photograph streets in minute detail across the world on Tuesday.
The company also revealed rankings of the most popular places for users, with the Burj Khalifa in Dubai topping the list for buildings, followed by the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal.
According to Google, Indonesia is the most popular country for Street View, followed by the United States, Japan, Mexico, and Brazil. Jakarta, Indonesia's capital was the most searched city, ahead of Tokyo, Mexico City, Sao Paolo, and Buenos Aires.
In a blog post, the company boasted that it had collected 220 billion photographs and traveled more than 10 million miles since the initial images of places such as San Francisco, New York, and Miami were released.
Since then, it has supplied armchair travelers with panoramic views ranging from the peak of Everest to the depths of the Great Barrier Reef.
It is to be noted that though Google Street View panoramic photographs have become part of millions of people's daily lives but in its early years it was the subject of numerous legal battles and privacy campaigners' concerns.
