Forbes MEA: Jumeirah Group plans to undertake a landmark restoration of Burj Al Arab, marking the first major conservation programme for one of the world’s most recognisable hotels since it opened its doors in 1999.

 Burj Al Arab restoration
The Dubai-based luxury hospitality company announced that the restoration will be carried out over approximately 18 months in a carefully phased approach, designed to preserve Burj Al Arab’s architectural integrity while subtly enhancing its interiors. The initiative reflects a broader effort to safeguard the hotel's legacy, which has come to define modern luxury hospitality on a regional and global scale.

Jumeirah CEO Thomas B. Meier described the property as more than an architectural landmark, positioning it instead as a symbol of craftsmanship, ambition and enduring excellence.

The phased nature of the project is expected to allow the hotel to maintain operations throughout the restoration period, ensuring continuity of service for guests while upgrades are implemented with minimal disruption.

Jumeirah is a member of Dubai Holding and operates a portfolio of 29 properties across 11 countries in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

 Design leadership and vision
The restoration will be led by French Interior Architect Tristan Auer, following what Jumeirah described as a rigorous selection process. Auer, known for his refined and heritage-sensitive approach, has been tasked with preserving the hotel’s distinctive design language while introducing a contemporary sensibility aligned with evolving luxury standards.

Having founded his Paris-based studio in 2002, Auer has built a reputation working on high-profile projects across private residences, hotels and cultural landmarks. His portfolio includes the restoration of the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris and the transformation of Les Bains Douches, projects that have cemented his standing in international hospitality design.

"Being entrusted with the very first restoration of a property of this calibre in Dubai, the Jumeirah Burj Al Arab, a timeless icon of the region, is a profound privilege. To carry forward, with the utmost dedication, the legacy of such an extraordinary landmark is both an honour and a responsibility," stated Auer.

 Cultural icon
Home to 198 suites, the Burj Al Arab is renowned for its opulent interiors, featuring extensive use of marble, gold leaf and Swarovski crystal. Its distinctive silhouette and lavish design have helped secure its status as one of the most photographed hotels in the world, while its service standards continue to attract global recognition.

The property has received numerous accolades over the years, including earning a five-star rating in the Forbes Travel Guide.
