This one might be for the OG Dubai kids or now, adults in this case. The iconic Lamcy Plaza is finally reopening after being closed for nearly a decade. Just like us, this local icon has done some growing up over the last few years, trading in its old name for a sleeker, more sophisticated upgrade – The Plaza. And we couldn’t be more stoked about this return. The only question that persists: will they put the iconic rope-climbing clown back into the infrastructure? Only time will tell.

A little backstory on the famed Lamcy Plaza

So before we get into the details of the reopening, let’s get into the history of the legendary building that went on a temporary hiatus of 8.5 years.

The iconic community mall opened way back in the year 1997 and was one the Dubai’s earliest and most beloved spaces to hangout in. From families to teens, this was just about everyone’s go-to spot even before Dubai Mall or Mall of the Emirates came to be. Spanning across five floors and housing over 150 stores, the space just had it all. From small scale driving schools, to popular fashion retailers, cinemas and a grocery store – everyone’s weekend plans included heading to Lamcy Plaza.

What truly remains etched in everyone’s memory is the space’s legendary interiors. It’s those few hyper-specific details, things no other place had, that cement it as Dubai’s most nostalgic mall. One was the oh-so-iconic rope-climbing clown that scaled all the way to the fifth floor before making its descent and starting all over again. The other detail being the cascading waterfalls that stretched across multiple floors, which also served as a perfect photo-op spot for a lot of film camera pictures. Got you reminiscing, didn’t we?

But all this came to halt in March of 2017, when Lamcy Plaza shut their doors to the public temporarily to renovate, with hopes of reopening soon.

So, when will Lamcy Plaza 2.0 reopen?

For almost a decade, the site sat vacant on Oud Metha’s 21st street, with no one going in or out. It was only in September of 2025, that the site was successfully sold through Emirates Auction for a whopping Dhs188.7 million. In much recent times, people have noticed major changes being made to the exteriors. Lamcy Plaza was officially laying the groundwork for a brand new chapter.

The news was only confirmed after Gulf News took to their socials announcing the return of the iconic mall with brand shell, core and name.

Set to reopen as The Plaza, details of the exact launch date and timings remain tightly under wraps. But one thing remains certain: whenever it finally makes its comeback, the OGs will be right there waiting to welcome it home.
