High-tech solutions have changed almost every aspect of life from work to education and recreation, as smart appliances now take this transition to another level. But beyond making life easier for households and individuals with digital assistance for everyday tasks, technology has also worked wonders for empowering people of determination.
Both leading operating systems now have tools to make sure visually impaired or hearing impaired people could benefit from smartphones like anyone else. This approach has also made its way in the field of edtech, prompting a university in Egypt to launch an application that opens up new possibilities for students who are visually challenged.
Designed to boost the learning experience for people who can't see, this platform is loaded with lectures recorded by the faculty and summarised by the system. It also contains textbooks converted into audio files, which are protected against cyber attacks.
Introduced by the Zagazig University, the app allows students to access study material in any language, hence enabling them to join linguistic departments in the future. Lectures can be uploaded by heads of department on every subject, and measure to prevent e-book thefts are in place to safeguard their content.
Beyond acting as a hassle-free way to read text for visually impaired students, the app also has a feature that describes images to the user. This way people of determination can make the most of visual data, without being restricted by their condition.
Currently the institution has unveiled a lab that has computers and mobile devices, to be used by the faculty and students for accessing the platform. It also consists of speaking programs, which will facilitate training of learners as well as the university staff, so that they can use the app efficiently.
Apart from tech-assisted lessons, Zagazig University also has sing along pavements, Braille buttons for elevators and tactile surface indicators, lined up to make life easier for people of determination at the campus.
