Mashable: The crescent moon marking the end of the Islamic month of Dhu Al Qadah was captured in broad daylight on Monday, May 26, 2025.
UAE's Astronomy Centre shared a picture of the crescent moon on X (formerly known as Twitter), captured by the Al Khatm Astronomical Observatory at 11.40 am UAE time, when the moon was approximately twelve degrees from the sun. Also, the moon was just eighteen hours old at the time.
The crescent was photographed by the observatory team, including Osama Ghanem, Anas Mohammed, Khalfan Al Nuaimi, and Mohammed Awda, who teamed up to capture the moon in daylight using advanced astronomical imaging equipment.
Islamic countries mark the start of Dhul Hijjah and the celebration of Eid Al Adha (also known as Bakra Eid, Bakrid, Eid Qurban, Qurban Bayarami) with moon sightings.
Dhul Hijjah is the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds great significance for Muslims around the world as it is the month during which the annual pilgrimage - Hajj takes place in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
