Egypt Today: CAIRO - 7 APRIL 2026: Italian energy giant Eni has announced a significant gas and condensate discovery in Egypt after drilling the Denise W 1 exploration well in the Eastern Mediterranean’s Temsah concession, with strong potential for fast-track development thanks to nearby infrastructure.
Initial estimates point to around 2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and roughly 130,000 barrels of associated condensates, according to the company. The Denise W well is located about 70 kilometres offshore in water depths of 95 metres, and less than 10 kilometres from existing infrastructure, a factor expected to help speed up development through tie-ins with nearby facilities.
The discovery is said to resemble the neighboring Temsah field, which has been producing since 2001. It contains a high-quality gas-bearing sandstone reservoir with a net thickness of up to 50 metres.
Eni said the find supports its strategy of renewing existing producing assets through near-field exploration, making use of already available plants and infrastructure to bring new volumes online more quickly.
The discovery also fits into Egypt’s broader push to strengthen gas reserves and raise production in support of the country’s energy security goals.
The Denise W-1 well comes after a binding agreement signed in July 2025 with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, EGAS, to renew the Temsah concession for 20 years.
Eni operates the Denise Development concession with a 50 percent stake, while bp holds the remaining 50 percent. Operations are carried out through Petrobel, the joint venture between Eni and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation.
