Time Out Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabians, get ready – the capital’s entertainment scene is about to level up in a seriously futuristic way.
The masterminds behind the jaw-dropping Las Vegas Sphere are bringing their next big project right here in Abu Dhabi and yes, it’s going to be massive.
Sphere Abu Dhabi just took a big step closer to becoming reality after Sphere Entertainment Co. (the team behind Vegas’ glowing globe of wonder) confirmed it’s moving forward with construction plans alongside the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi).
So, what is the marvel of entertainment? Here’s everything we know about Sphere Abu Dhabi so far…
What exactly is the Sphere?
If you missed the headlines when the Las Vegas Sphere launched in 2023, here’s the lowdown: it’s a giant, high-tech dome that’s equal parts concert venue, immersive cinema and jaw-dropping piece of architecture. With space for nearly 20,000 people and visuals so sharp they make your phone screen look fuzzy, it quickly became one of the most talked-about attractions in the world.
Vegas’ Sphere welcomed more than 24 million visitors in its first year alone. Abu Dhabi is now gearing up to host the second Sphere ever built, cementing its status as a global entertainment capital.
What we know so far about Abu Dhabi’s version
- Partnership: Sphere Entertainment is working with DCT Abu Dhabi to bring the mega-venue to life.
- Design phase: The pre-construction stage is now being finalised, so expect details on the exact location on Yas Island and opening timeline soon.
- Capacity: Like Vegas, the Abu Dhabi Sphere will host around 20,000 people, making it one of the largest and most advanced live entertainment venues in the region.
- Tech magic: Think next-level visuals, mind-bending sound and immersive shows that will make you question reality.
The aim is to create a venue that’s busy 365 days a year with concerts, residencies and blockbuster-scale experiences.
There are also going to be smaller spheres coming soon too. Yes, you read that right. Alongside mega-domes like Vegas and Abu Dhabi, Sphere Entertainment is also working on smaller versions that can bring the same content to different locations. That means shows created for Abu Dhabi’s Sphere could one day pop up in miniature globes across the world. Pretty wild.
Why Abu Dhabi?
The capital has been making serious moves on the global entertainment stage – think Formula 1, UFC, mega concerts, Saadiyat’s cultural district and Yas Island’s theme parks. Adding the Sphere into the mix is like putting a giant glowing cherry (or, more accurately, a dome) on top.
When will the Abu Dhabi Sphere open?
There’s no confirmed opening date yet, but excitement is already building. Given the Las Vegas Sphere’s impact – becoming a must-see icon practically overnight – Abu Dhabi’s version is tipped to do the same, drawing international acts, visitors and plenty of Insta posts.
But, if we make some reasonable assumptions, we can put together a loose timeline of what the countdown to Sphere Abu Dhabi’s opening date could look like.
As of August 2025, pre-construction was nearly complete. Design finalisation is scheduled for the first half of 2026, and construction can start sooner after that is confirmed. With that in mind, an opening date of 2028 or early 2029 looks likely. There’s no firm date yet, but we can expect an update imminently.
