District 2020 will become the country’s first “15-minute city”, as it will allow residents to cycle from one end to the other in just 15 minutes.

Ever wondered what a site as big as that of Expo 2020 Dubai would happen when the event is concluded in March 2022? The site that was built over the years to host such a global event will be turned into a residential community.

The legacy site of Expo 2020 Dubai, will be converted into a health and well-being abode, promoting an active and balanced lifestyle. The site will see residents move into apartments at District 2020 by the end of this year, the transition process of which will be carried out in phases over nine months after the world’s biggest cultural event ends.

With the site’s focus being sustainability, District 2020 will become the country’s first “15-minute city”, as it will allow residents to cycle from one end to the other in just 15 minutes.

From offices, parks, groceries, retail shops, restaurants and coffee shops, the District will have everything within 15 minutes, that will be accessible by simply cycling. Apart from cycling, the district is also going to have driverless electric cars when the project is fully finished.

The “human-centric” city aims to make the living here car-free by connecting people via pedestrian walkways, autonomous vehicle routes and public transportation networks.

With the Expo getting over in less than two months, the UAE has already started planning on how to make the best use of the event site including a dedicated autonomous vehicle route, a 10-kilometre cycling track, interconnected, wide pedestrianised pathways and a 5km jogging track.
