Mashable: If you think they are wearing a fashion mask, it is not.

FIFA World Cup 2022 is going on in Qatar, and many people are thinking about why players like Son Heung-min, Joko Gvardiol, and Ellyes Skhiri are seen on the field wearing unusual Batman-style face masks. Many people are confused as to why some of the players are wearing face masks.

If you think they are wearing a fashion mask, it is not. These seem to be high-tech protective devices made of polycarbonate and other materials. These masks are worn by players who have sustained facial injuries. It is worn to prevent these athletes from hurting themselves further and to protect their faces from any more harm.
