In its quest to lead the tech revolution of the Middle East, the Emirates is encouraging local talent via initiatives like the world's first AI university. At the same time the country is nurturing innovators from across the globe through its Technology and Innovation Institute along with a startup hub in the Emirati capital.
Recently the UAE even offered 100,000 golden passports to the best coders in the world, as part of a vision to establish 1000 new tech firms in the country. The first Solar Decathlon Middle East organised in the same spirit has paid off for Dubai, which is now gearing up for its first sustainable house.
Being assembled by a French team which was among the winners of the decathlon, the smart home will be cooled using radiative panels to get rid of excess heat. The mechanism installed on rooftops of the residence will emit infrared waves into the atmosphere, so that the heat is scattered and temperature comes down.
The heat exchange which deals with the sun's impact during daytime, uses the same process to yield cold water, when exposed to the night sky. Apart from this the household will also have a water recycling system powered by bio solar purification.
For protection from harsh conditions in the desert, the building will be sheltered by solar canopies that will also ensure power supply for the residents. In addition to that, plants cultivated using recycled water will create a green cover on the roof as well as walls of the house for a comforting environment.
Researchers at BaityKoo will also deploy aquaponics as part of the project, for ensuring food security, that is a priority for the region. The technique combines an agritech method hydroponics with aquaculture, which is the process of fish farming.
Here the fish create microbes via waste, which provides nutrition for vegetables to grow, and the crops in turn purify the water needed for fish to thrive in. This way a cycle is created that ensures production of both sea food as well as greens.
Considering the innovation that has come to Dubai after the first decathlon, the city can expect a lot more from the second edition which will be organised shortly.
