In the run up to next year's football world cup, Qatar has accelerated the integration of smart living solutions into its public services, and this includes the enhancement of the daily commute for residents. As visitors are expected to arrive in the gulf country from across the globe, the administration is planning to introduce more than a thousand electric buses to carry fans across the nation.
Qatar's power authority Karamaa recently unveiled a high-speed charging station in the country, which can power up a wagon in just 10 minutes, following other projects like a solar unit. To extend advanced charging capabilities to its public bus fleet, the country has roped in the sector's global giant ABB, which already provides this service in 85 countries.
The firm will be backing a network which is meant to transport more than 50,000 people on a daily basis, across the country. In addition to 1300 connectors for 1000 buses at designated stations, the infrastructure will also consist of opportunity chargers which can be mobile.
These opportunity devices are designed to make sure that vehicles can be swiftly rejuvenated during the operations, without any interruptions. The convenience is maintained since buses can be charged overnight, thanks to the combination of different tech in the network.
An internet connection will also link the infrastructure with the fleet control system called Mowasalat, in order to adjust functioning and schedules round the clock. ABB's own cloud will also be monitoring the network and charging stations remotely, to make sure that glitches are spotted and fixed in a timely manner.
The move is part of a larger push for achieving Qatar's goal of electrifying a quarter of its public buses by next year, before moving towards a 100% transformation till 2030. The partnership with ABB rides on the fact that the firm has sold over 400,000 EV chargers across the globe, since it first entered the market a decade back.
