Mashable: Popular AI models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot require an internet connection to function. This is because they need substantial computing power to run independently on a device. While installing and running AI models on a PC is possible, smartphones have more limited capabilities. However, Google has found a way to make this possible.

The tech giant has released an app called Google AI Edge Gallery, allowing users to download and run AI models on their phones without an internet connection. Currently, the app supports compatible models from the AI development platform Hugging Face. While Google has only released the Android version so far, the iOS version should be dropping soon.

Once installed, users can chat with these models, generate images, write code, and ask them questions.

Since the models are stored directly on the device, all data remains secure. Additionally, users can expect faster responses, as the models do not rely on servers for processing. Another major benefit is that internet connectivity is not required, making the app accessible even in remote locations without Wi-Fi or mobile data.

The Google AI Edge Gallery application is currently in its experimental Alpha release, available for download from GitHub following the provided instructions. The performance of these AI models will depend on the hardware capabilities of the particular phone. Additionally, larger models will require more processing time to execute the same tasks.
