Remote working has become the norm for several professions and video calling, data sharing as well as virtual presentations are here to stay for industries where people can continue to work from home, even in the post-pandemic environment. For those jobs where coming to the workplace is essential or operations in the field are non-negotiable for productivity, organisations are modifying offices with digital solutions to create a hybrid ecosystem, where social distancing isn't compromised.
The adoption of technology to overcome challenges and limitations created by the lockdown, has also opened doors for innovation in industries where smart tools have emerged as game changers for safety of employees and accuracy in day-to-day tasks. One example of this is the accelerated use of remote monitoring solutions for maintenance at facilities, which also enabled an Indonesian firm to carry out inspection of an oil rig situated in the UAE.
The facility set up near Dubai was observed through a live video feed, which allowed technicians to get a closer look at the condition of the rig, for ensuring smooth functioning in the near future. Clients and investors, along with other stake holders were also connected to the live stream, to track the maintenance exercise being conducted from a safe distance.
Carried out using services from Applus Indonesia, theprocedure was meant to get an accurate picture of the condition of the rig, so that bidders are able to figure out the right value for the unit. The inspection that took three days was completed back in August, and the consistent, high-speed data connectivity available in Dubai played a crucial role in its success.
Recently, the use of visual communication platforms and robots that can be controlled from a distance, has ensured contactless service for healthcare and retail, while scaling up safety for sectors like construction, manufacturing and defence. Addressing issues or carrying out maintenance via video, has also reduced pressure on employees as well as technicians.
