Mashable: A repost feature would reduce workarounds for sharing via third-party tools.

According to a new report, Instagram has acknowledged that it is working on a feature that would allow users to reshare content from other accounts. The business is planning to start testing the repost option with select users shortly, but it has not yet made the tool available to the general public.

A Meta representative told TechCrunch via email, "We're researching the option to reshare posts in Feed — similar to how you can reshare in Stories — so users may share what resonates with them, and so original authors get acknowledged for their work." We hope to do preliminary testing with a limited sample size very soon.

The report notes that social media strategist Matt Navarra was the first to discover the new functionality when he shared a screenshot of a new Reposts tab. People's reshared content will probably be collected on this tab. Users' profiles will have the Repost tab in addition to the Posts, Reels, and Tagged Photos sections, as seen in the picture.

According to the image posted by Navarra, reposts on Instagram will be visible to your followers in their feeds and on your profile on the dedicated repost page.

Instagram doesn't have a built-in feature to repost user posts, so users resort to third-party tools. A repost feature would reduce workarounds for sharing. You can already share a user's post in your Story, but now you can do it in your feed, too. Instagram recognizes that many users utilize "Share on Stories" and direct messaging to share posts with friends. It now aims to make it easy to share content with others.

Twitter's Retweet function is often credited as the inspiration for the notion of reposts throughout social media, which has now spread to other sites.

According to app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, who first identified the feature in development back in May, Instagram has been working on reposts for at least a few months. Screenshots released by Paluzzi suggest that the repost feature will be accessible through the share menu. Images show that users will be able to comment on shared content.
