https://www.arabianbusiness.com/: A familiar British automotive name is preparing for a new life, this time with Chinese technology under the bonnet and the UAE in its sights.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chinese carmaker Chery have unveiled the international five-seat version of the FREELANDER 8, the first model from a new standalone premium SUV brand born out of the two companies’ partnership.
The vehicle made its public appearance at the 2026 Chery International User Summit in China, where FREELANDER also announced an artificial intelligence-powered voice assistant and signed distribution agreements with partners in Bahrain and Oman.
The FREELANDER 8 is expected to launch in the UAE in the first quarter of 2027, with pricing and final specifications still to be confirmed.
The launch represents a significant test of a collaboration that combines JLR’s British design heritage with Chery’s technology, manufacturing capabilities and supply chain.
From Land Rover badge to independent brand
The original Land Rover Freelander was launched in 1997 and became an important part of the British marque’s SUV range before production ended in 2015.
Now, rather than returning as a conventional Land Rover model, FREELANDER is being developed as an independent automotive brand.
Under the arrangement announced in 2024, JLR retains ownership of the FREELANDER brand and leads its design through a dedicated design hub.
Chery contributes vehicle technology, engineering and manufacturing expertise, drawing on its experience in China’s fast-moving electric and electrified vehicle market.
The distinction is important. FREELANDER is intended to operate separately from JLR’s existing Range Rover, Defender and Discovery brands, as well as Chery’s own vehicle line-up.
The partnership offers both sides a route to growth. JLR brings decades of experience in premium SUV design and positioning, while Chery provides access to the technology and industrial infrastructure needed to compete in an increasingly electrified global market.
Two layouts for the FREELANDER 8
The newly revealed international five-seat FREELANDER 8 will sit alongside a six-seat, three-row version, giving the brand two cabin configurations for different customer requirements.
Its design draws on the original Freelander’s heritage, with what the company describes as a castle-style body, a yacht-inspired waistline and a distinctive triangular side window incorporating the letters F and L.
Technology is central to the new model’s positioning. The intelligent cockpit features a 46.3-inch Mini LED display and Qualcomm’s SA8295P automotive-grade computing platform.
The vehicle also comes with Level 2+ driver-assistance technology as standard, according to the company.
FREELANDER has additionally announced an AI voice assistant powered by a large language model, designed to enable more natural conversations between drivers and their vehicles.
The company has not yet disclosed the full specifications, equipment levels or pricing for the UAE version.
Why the UAE comes first
The UAE is central to FREELANDER’s international strategy, with the company planning a phased expansion that begins in left-hand-drive markets across the Middle East and North Africa.
Al Tayer Motors and Premier Motors have been appointed as the brand’s authorised distributors in the UAE, covering Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and Abu Dhabi respectively.
The latest agreements with EK Kanoo Group in Bahrain and Saud Bahwan Group in Oman extend its regional distribution network.
Following its Middle East launch phase, FREELANDER plans to expand into right-hand-drive markets, prioritising Australia and New Zealand, before moving into continental Europe, the UK and Ireland.
That strategy places the Gulf at the front of the queue for a brand that aims to combine premium positioning, connected technology and all-terrain capability.
For JLR, the project offers a way to extend the value of a recognised name without folding it into its established luxury marques. For Chery, it creates an opportunity to take a new brand built with British design credentials into international markets.
The commercial challenge will be turning that combination into a compelling ownership proposition, backed by competitive pricing, reliable after-sales support and products that can stand apart in a crowded SUV market.
FREELANDER’s first model will provide the clearest indication yet of whether the British-Chinese formula can travel beyond its home market. The UAE will be among the first places to find out.
