Microsoft has announced that it is finally retiring its eons old Internet Explorer on 15th June 2022.
In a recent blog post, Microsoft said that it plans to completely phase out Internet Explorer 11 which is the latest version of the browser. For companies that make apps specifically for Internet Explorer, Microsoft has baken in an online Explorer compatibility mode to Edge, to make sure critical enterprise apps stop functioning all of a sudden.
We sort of knew Microsoft was going to retire its embarrassingly old Internet Explorer browser sooner or later since the launch of Edge back in 2015. Since its glory days in 2003, Internet Explorer saw a diminishing userbase long before Edge was a thing.
In the early 2000s, Internet Explorer was actually one among the simplest browsers out there and supported cutting-edge technologies that no other browser supported. But, thanks to Microsoft's persistent use of proprietary APIs and lack of consistent updates, Internet Explorer quickly lost ground to other web browsers like Chrome and Firefox within the early 2010s.
The Redmond giant has also detailed a timeline to let organisations and end users slowly but surely transition to Edge. There's also a full fledged FAQ page to help better understand the kind of impact the move away from IE on "organizations, developers, IT admins and even users", and what they need to do to prepare.
