Forbes.com: Email is one of the highest risk apps on your phone. And so Microsoft’s decision to kill one of its long-standing mobile email apps has security implications, as users are pushed to alternatives. Now the company has confirmed that Outlook Lite, the app specifically for Android users, will shut down in just six weeks.

After May 25, this Android app stops working. Check your phone now.

Per Neowin, “Microsoft has locked in (the) final death date for Outlook Lite on Android,” which will “officially lose all mailbox access” on that deadline, “as Microsoft shifts its focus to the feature-rich Outlook Mobile."

Outlook Mobile is now the standard offering across Android and iOS. Outlook Lite, Android’s own option, is no more. There was never an Outlook Lite for iOS. This app is for Android users and for their lower-powered devices.

It’s unclear how many users this affects, albeit new installs have been blocked for the last six months. Microsoft says the Outlook Lite app was retired “starting October 6th, 2025. Existing users can continue using the app for a limited time before full retirement.” Given it’s a lightweight option versus the full-fat Outlook Mobile app, it’s likely to be users with older or less powerful devices.

After the deadline next month, “the Outlook Lite app will still open but mailbox access will be disabled and in-app navigation and functionality won’t work,” Neowin explains. No accounts will be deleted, but nothing will work properly.

Microsoft tells users to switch to Outlook Mobile instead, where “all existing email, calendar items, and attachments will remain accessible when users sign in.” This consolidation ensures tighter security for all mobile users.

Per XDA-Developers, “Microsoft has been on a bit of a culling spree with its apps lately.” As such, you can likely expect more changes to come. Thankfully, the escape path for any users affected by this latest change is easy and already set up for you.

"Aside from going into the Play Store and finding Outlook Mobile manually," Neowin explains, “there is also an Upgrade option inside the Outlook Lite app which will send you off to the Play Store to get the latest update. Directing users here could be more straightforward for admins.”
