Mashable: The Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus is ending its three-year-long partnership with Hasselblad. The renowned camera maker tuned the imaging system on the flagship OnePlus phones as part of the partnership. The collaboration began with the OnePlus 9 series and continued through the OnePlus 13, but the company now says it’s ready to take full control of its camera tech.

In a recent statement, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed the shift, revealing that the brand has developed its own imaging system called the DetailMax Engine. The new engine is likely to make its debut with the upcoming OnePlus 15. Lau claims the DetailMax Engine benefits from advanced algorithms and a redesigned camera pipeline, allowing it to deliver “images with unmatched depth and realism.” He also mentioned that he’s been testing an early prototype and is impressed with the results so far. While OnePlus is moving on, its parent company Oppo is still working with Hasselblad.

Oppo recently extended its partnership and plans to use Hasselblad’s imaging expertise in the upcoming Find X9 series. So, while Hasselblad branding will disappear from OnePlus phones, it won’t vanish from the BBK ecosystem altogether. The decision to split appears to be strategic. OnePlus has been investing heavily in its own camera software and hardware, and the DetailMax Engine is likely a result of that effort.

By building its own system, the company can fine-tune image processing to better suit its design goals and user expectations. The OnePlus 15 is expected to launch later this year. Leaks suggest that the phone would pack a 7000mAh battery with support for 120W—the fastest ever on a OnePlus phone. Moreover, the device may be equipped with Qualcomm’s flagship chipset, Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.
