The surgical robot controlled through a console and screen, imitates the movement of a doctor's hands.

Launched into tne mainstream during the pandemic, medtech gadgets are transforming the way complex procedures are carried out in the UAE, as social distancing has opened the doors for contactless services in the new normal. Robots had been around for a while in different sectors, but they recently made an appearance in hotels, malls, airports and at hospitals as caregivers for quarantined patients, to ensure the safety of frontline staff in the battle against the pandemic.

The requirement for more innovative gadgets in the medical field, has led to invention of devices which can cure migraines or even disabilities by stimulating brainwaves, and can carry out operations with precision. Following the successful use of robotic arms for several surgeries in Emirati cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, doctors are now relying on mechanical assistants to perform procedures to aid weight-loss in the country.

Empowered with fully movable wrists, the robo-surgeon can be controlled remotely by doctors through a console and a screen that displays visual updates of the entire process. The device enables a minimally invasive operations, brings in higher precision while imitating movements the surgeon's hand, and also features direct hand to instrument mapping.

Using the machine is also better for accuracy, since it makes way for better control, and provides a clearer picture of the ongoing procedure by relaying 3D images, captured in high definition. But most importantly, the use of the robot called Versius, can significantly reduce the chances of patients getting infected with covid.

Over the past several months, robo-surgeons have removed tumours in the UAE, while humanoids have also doubled up as nurses in other parts of the Middle East. Tiny robots have also been invented in the region, to deliver drugs with precision, in order to destroy cancer cells, while avoiding side-effects.

In addition to robotics, AI has also empowered healthcare by spotting serious conditions early on, and virtual reality has enabled surgeons from different parts of the world to collaborate on an operation in the UAE.
