An investigative journalist who wrote about the recent Russian mercenary deaths in Syria died after a mysterious fall at his home, according to reports.

Russian reporter Maxim Borodin took the fatal tumble Thursday from his fifth-floor apartment balcony in Yekaterinburg. He died Sunday at a hospital.

Authorities are investigating his death as a suicide though no note was found, according to Radio Free Europe.

A day before his fall, Borodin contacted his friend Vyacheslav Bashkov around 5 a.m. and said there were “security forces” outside his apartment in camouflage.

The officers were waiting for a court order to search his apartment, Borodin told the pal. He asked Bashkov to find him a lawyer.

But an hour later, Borodin told Bashkov he was wrong – the men were really just taking part in a security drill.

Borodin’s apartment was found locked from the inside and there was no evidence of forced entry.

The 32-year-old scribe worked for new website Novy Den and wrote about the Feb. 7 deaths of Russian mercenaries known as the “Wagner Group” who were killed in an attack on a US-held base in Syria.

The mercenaries were a mix of Russians and Ukrainians fighting on the side of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

A “couple hundred” of them were killed, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said last week.
