New creative centre in Jeddah—Hayy Jameel, a dedicated home for the arts is welcoming the art season with a five-month opening period starting from December 6, 2021.
The Art Jameel Foundation, which announced the news on Tuesday said that the season will run till April 30, 2022, and will feature a roster of exhibitions and art programs throughout these five months.
The season will host a series of workshops, tours, and talks, exhibitions including ‘Staple: What’s on your plate?’ co-curated by Art Jameel and Delfina Foundation, ‘Illuminate: a Noor Riyadh Capsule,’ featuring major light works by 11 Saudi artists ‘Paused Mirror,’ a newly assigned collection of portraits of Saudi artists by Osama Esid, and the inaugural Hayy Jamel Façade Commission, awarded to Nasser Almulhim.
The opening season will feature over 45 artists and researchers from around 20 countries along with existing and newly commissioned works by 19 Saudi artists.
Hayy Jameel— the Kingdom’s dedicated home for the arts, is designed by multi-award-winning architectural studio Waiwai and conceived as a dynamic, creative, community hub. The name of the 17,000-square-metre creative complex is derived from an Arabic word for the neighbourhood, to denote its intent as an accessible, communal, and collaborative space.
Talking about the new art season, Fady Jameel, Chairman and Founder of Art Jameel, shared, “Hayy Jameel’s opening has been 20 years in the making and marks the celebration of over three-quarters of a century of Jameel philanthropic and community activities – manifesting at a dynamic moment and exceptionally exciting time for cultural life in Saudi Arabia.”
The art season also coincides with Saudi’s robust cultural calendar including the launch of the first Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale, Red Sea International Film Festival, Misk Art Week, Tuwaiq International Sculpture Symposium and many more.
