Mashable: This will be Saudi Arabia’s first space mission
Saudi Arabia is set to make history with its first space mission.
The launch date of Saudi Arabia’s first mission to space has been declared.
The Kingdom’s first space mission is scheduled to take place in May 2023.
The historic space mission will see two Saudi astronauts, Rayyanah Barnawi, the first Arab female astronaut, and Ali AlQarni going to the International Space Station.
As per Khaleej Times, the duo will blast off to the International Space Station on May 21, 2023, from the United States.
The space mission is historic as it is the first for the Kingdom and will also see the first astronauts from the country.
Rayyanah Barnawi will become the first Arab woman astronaut to embark on this journey to ISS.
The two will conduct 14 scientific experiments in microgravity. The experiments will help scientists and researchers plan new ways to further provide suitable conditions for humans to explore space.
The astronauts will also be taking part in three experiments for educational awareness alongside 12,000 students from Saudi Arabia through a live feed.
The space mission is part of Saudi Arabia’s astronauts’ program which was launched on September 22.
The space mission will represent the Kingdom’s ambitions in space research and is part of Saudi Arabia’s goals of Vision 2030.
If everything goes well, the mission will help the Kingdom to advance in its global position in space exploration. Besides supporting the Kingdom’s research centers, it will also have a scientific impact on Saudi Arabia’s future space exploration.
The space mission will also put the Kingdom as one of the few nations to have had two of its astronauts simultaneously on board the ISS.
