Reflecting the area’s inhabitants over time, interviews will be conducted with a diverse range of people aged 60 and above.
Bringing out the history and glories of Sharjah’s land, Sharjah Art Foundation has launched a new project that will collect oral histories of three important areas— Al Mureijah, Al Shoyoukh and Al Shuwaiheen.
The oral history project aims to learn more about the social and urban fabric of these three regions and invites people who are aged 60 and above to share their stories.
The neighbourhoods are among the most historic in the emirate, however, there is little written or recorded documentation of the significant transformations these areas have undergone over the past decades, Sharjah Art Foundation will use the research gathered in this project to help compile and preserve a historic overview of the old quarter.
“As part of this project, people over the age of 60 who have lived or worked in these neighbourhoods are invited to share their life stories before, during and after the successive phases of change and development,” the Foundation said.
Reflecting the area’s inhabitants over time, interviews will be conducted with a diverse range of people.
Individuals with a tribal lineage distinct to the Arabian Gulf as well as those with families from other regional and international backgrounds who settled in Sharjah between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, through to the present day will be engaged in dialogues.
Those who would like to contribute to the research by sharing stories or names of potential participants can contact the department directly at Sharjah Art Foundation’s website.
