(Dunya News) – Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has called solar power the most viable solution to Pakistan’s climate challenges, including devastating floods, stressing that renewable energy is the need of the hour. Speaking at the 2nd International Solar Power Conclave and Technology Excellence Awards 2025 in Lahore, organized by Energy Update with support from PPIB, PSA, PAEA and REAP, the Governor said, “Solar is the best energy source to protect the environment and safeguard Pakistan against natural disasters.” He emphasized that the rising cost of electricity has become unbearable for citizens, and urged the government to support solarization to break free from the Independent Power Producers’ (IPPs) trap. He expressed concern over shifting policies on green meters, which he said created uncertainty for the public.

He also pointed out that after the 2022 floods, Sindh installed solar systems in 2.1 million newly built houses as part of rehabilitation efforts.

The Governor called for large-scale local manufacturing of solar panels and inverters to ensure affordable clean energy and job creation. “We need a renewable energy revolution, and the government will stand with the solar fraternity,” he assured. Other speakers also stressed the importance of government backing, investment, and new technologies such as floating solar and battery storage. Member of the Prime Minister’s Solarization Committee, Engr.

Syed Faizan Ali Shah, revealed that lifeline electricity consumers had risen to 18 million, putting further strain on subsidies, while 583 captive industries were being shifted to the on-grid system. Industry leaders including Javed Afridi, Zakir Ali of Inverex, and Waqas Moosa of the Pakistan Solar Association highlighted the sector’s huge potential but lamented inconsistent policies and high taxation that hinder growth. The event also honored solar innovators with Solar Excellence Awards 2025, while former cricket captain Muhammad Yousaf attended as a special guest.
