Next week promises a celestial spectacle over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the Geminids meteor shower reaches its peak, with an expected display of more than 100 shooting stars per hour.

Running from November 19 to December 24, the Geminids are renowned as one of the most captivating astronomical events of the year. On Thursday, December 14, the cosmic show is set to dazzle even further as the Moon remains out of sight, enhancing visibility.

Dubai Astronomy Group expresses excitement, noting, "The Geminids are considered to be one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year, with the possibility of sighting around 120 meteors per hour at its peak."

Unlike typical meteor showers associated with comets, the Geminids have a unique origin linked to an asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon, according to the Dubai Astronomy Group. Nasa notes that the Geminids emerged in the mid-1800s, evolving from modest displays of 10 to 20 meteors per hour to becoming a major annual meteor shower.

Described by Nasa as "one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers," the Geminids offer an accessible experience for stargazers. No special equipment or expertise is required; enthusiasts are encouraged to find a dark spot away from city lights, lie down, and observe. The ideal setting, such as a desert, ensures an unobstructed view of the night sky. As Nasa suggests, "after about 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt, and you will begin to see meteors." Given the chilly desert conditions, dressing warmly is advised.

The Geminids are known for their brightness and speed, reaching up to 127,000 kmph and exhibiting a distinctive yellow color, as highlighted by Nasa.

For those seeking a guided experience, various groups in the UAE are organizing viewing sessions. The Mleiha Archaeological Centre in Sharjah is set to host stargazers on December 14 from 6 pm to 1 am, coinciding with the meteor shower's peak. Located at the Mleiha campsite, participants can witness the night sky ablaze, with the Al Faya mountain range and fossil rock providing a stunning backdrop. Prices for adults start from Dh275.

Alternatively, the Dubai Astronomy Group's viewing event on December 14 at Al Qudra desert promises not only shooting stars but also insights into the night sky. Attendees can learn about different planets and celestial objects through telescopes. Ticket rates for adults start from Dh160.
