After 16 years of existence, StumbleUpon, one of the Internet’s first social discovery platforms, is shutting down.

StumbleUpon has been around since Garett Camp created it back in 2002 while he was still at college. Since then, the platform that catered to just over 40 million users (indeed not that many in the grand scheme of things) who have found around 60 billion “stumbles.” However, at one point, StumbleUpon drove almost half the social traffic on the Internet, and that’s a huge deal!

The Internet has changed a lot in that time though, and StumbleUpon’s founder has a new project that he’d like his company Expa to concentrate on – Mix.

Mix is a new discovery platform that builds on StumbleUpon’s foundation but “incorporates all of the lessons learned from StumbleUpon to take content discovery to the next level.” For one, it “combines social and semantic personalization into one streamlined experience,” making it easier for users to organise content “into meaningful collections.” Sounds like Pinterest much? Perhaps. As Camp explains, Mix “will help you find obscure but interesting content that has been recommended by people you know and trust.”

StumbleUpon will cease to exist as an entity but will continue to live from within Mix, as it will become a part of it after June 30. StumbleUpon’s users will be able to import their accounts, saving everything they’ve done so far on the platform.
