TikTok has been in the news lately despite its large following in the world, mainly for data security issues. U.S. officials are concerned that TikTok may give China's autocratic government access to user data. In September 2020, the Trump administration announced that it would ban the Chinese-owned smartphone applications WeChat and TikTok from US app stores. India banned Chinese-owned apps in 2020, including TikTok, citing national security concerns.
TikTok said Friday it would move U.S. user data to Oracle servers in the U.S. TikTok's migration announcement was overshadowed by a devastating allegation suggesting that TikTok personnel in China had access to its U.S. customers’ data as late as this January, according to the report.
BuzzFeed News reported that the U.S. TikTok employees routinely asked their Chinese colleagues about U.S. user data flow because they didn't know how to access it themselves.
"Everything is seen in China," a TikTok employee said in September 2021, according to the document.
More evidence casts doubt on the short video company's relationship with Beijing, as claimed by former US President Trump, and its public statements about the independence of its US business.
TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, have said they will never share American users' personal data. Microsoft and Oracle were also approached to sell the US operation, and the company considered selling a share to US investors to meet Trump's mandate.
The Biden administration canceled Trump-era executive orders and issued new ones mandating the review of foreign-controlled applications that pose a security risk to Americans and their personal data.
"100% of U.S. user traffic is routed to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure," TikTok said Friday. "We use our U.S. and Singapore data centers for backup, but as we continue our efforts, we expect to erase U.S. customers' private data from our data centers and migrate to Oracle cloud servers in the U.S."it added.
According to a March report, the companies were nearing a deal. TikTok said that it is "making operational adjustments," including the establishment of a U.S.-based leadership to "solely handle TikTok user data in the United States." We can do more despite these milestones. "We're among the most scrutinized platforms from a security standpoint, and we want to erase any doubts about US user data," it said.
