Mashable: Yusuf Dikec won a silver medal at 2024 Paris Olympics.
Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec grabbed attention during the 2024 Paris Olympics, all because of his nonchalant, hands-in-pocket pose that broke the internet. Well, well, the pistol sharpshooter has now filed to trademark his viral iconic pose. Yes, you've read that right.
In a recent interview with AFP, Dikec's coach, Erdinc Bilgili, shared that Yusuf's decision comes after several people tried to claim rights to his stance without his consent. Bilgili was quoted saying, "After being informed of numerous trademark registration initiatives carried out without Yusuf Dikec's knowledge, we submitted an application about a week ago."
Dikec won a silver medal in the mixed team 10-metre air pistol alongside his teammate, Sevval Illayda Tarhan at this year's Paris Olympics. In the photos and videos that went viral on social media, Yusuf was seen sporting a casual white T-shirt and just a pair of glasses. If that wasn't enough, he stood with one hand in his pocket. And just like that, he played the game and won a silver medal.
Soon the internet was flooded with memes online, some comparing him to the fictional spy James Bond. But wait, there's more! Dikec's pose has also been used on merchandise, including T-shirts, mugs, and phone cases.
Besides that, many have been copying his iconic pose as well. Recently, Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson recreated the pose as he scored against Crystal Palace in the English Premier League. Indian archer Rakesh Kumar was also compared to the Turkish shooter.
Earlier, in an interview with Turkish newspaper Haberturk, Dikec said, "I think my shooting pose represented the Olympic spirit very well: the fair play, simplicity, clarity, and naturalness. That's why it got so much attention. I never needed that equipment. I am a natural shooter."
