Mashable: Protecting users from trolls, on the other hand, is proving hard to maintain because of the manpower that is needed.
In light of recent layoffs in many critical departments, the microblogging site Twitter will be unable to filter material and safeguard users from trolling, misinformation, and child sexual exploitation, the BBC reported on Monday, citing company insiders.
In the year since Elon Musk became Twitter's CEO, a significant increase in the number of misogynistic and abusive accounts has been seen. Protecting users from trolls, on the other hand, is "proving hard to maintain" because of the qualities that are needed.
The "nudge" option is one of many functions that have been deleted. Its creator, Lisa Jennings Young, told the BBC that the button cut down on trolling by as much as 60 percent. This function warned users before they could submit a message containing trigger or hazardous words. It might also set up an automatic blocking system for abusive accounts. The entire Young team, however, was terminated in late November.
The BBC also said that since Musk took over, accounts were made with the goal of spreading hate. People have said that some of these profiles promote violence, sexism, and other forms of bigotry. Since Musk took over, the number of abusive and sexist profiles on the platform has gone up by 69%, according to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, which is based in the United Kingdom.
There was also a group within Twitter whose job it was to protect its users from "influence operations," which are state-backed plans to hurt journalists and political dissidents. Ray Serrato, who was a part of this group, claims that they routinely uncovered dubious behavior before Musk did. The original 20-person crew has been cut down to a more manageable size of six or seven people.
It's possible that Twitter served as a safe haven for journalists who wanted to criticize the government while still being heard. But he's beginning to doubt that's going to be the case, he informed the BBC.
Apparently, everyone on Twitter's communications team has either quit or been fired, according to rumors. Twitter's "core values" include "defending and protecting the user's voice," which is a major tenet of the company's guiding principles. If this is still true, however, it will certainly be revealed in the next several days.
