Mashable: In a miraculous story that’s sure to melt hearts across UAE borders, a 9-year-old girl was given a new life after receiving a heart from a brain-dead donor in Abu Dhabi. The patient, suffering from weak heart muscle, was striving hard to survive on an artificial pump that was placed in her body in March last year. The pump was a temporary solution until a matching donor was found for a heart transplant.
The excruciating wait was over owing to the coordination between the Saudi Centre for Organ Transplantation and the National Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues (Hayat), as per the Khaleej Times. The savior in this case was a brain-dead patient from Abu Dhabi. A team from Riyadh first traveled to the Cleveland Hospital for a heart removal surgery, the organ was then airlifted to Saudi for the transplant surgery on the 9-year-old patient.
After the successful medical procedure, the young girl now has a second chance at life. Notably, this was one of the three transplant surgeries that was performed at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in under 24 hours. The rushing nature of the procedures made them more crucial and complex. The second patient, a 40-year-old, received a heart from another brain-dead patient in Jeddah.
Meanwhile, the third patient a 41-year-old suffering from fourth-degree heart failure, got the organ from a matched donor in Riyadh.
All the surgeries were successful and the patients now remain under medical observation.
