Mashable: The United Arab Emirates is set to experience its first meteor shower, just a few days into 2023.

The first major meteor shower of 2023 in the UAE is set to take place on January 3.

Following the spectacular Geminids Meteor Shower, the UAE skies are all set to have another major celestial phenomenon.

The Quadrantids Meteor Shower will be visible to UAE residents on January 3, 2023.

Skygazers can view this celestial phenomenon without any special equipment or skills. The Quadrantids Meteor Shower will only need a clear sky and a viewing spot away from city lights.

As per Khaleej Times, the Dubai Astronomy Group said that the meteor shower which is the first major one of the year is among the strongest and most consistent.

The intensity of Quadrantids Meteor Shower could reach a maximum rate of 110 meteors per hour on a clear night. The event will continue till January 5, 2023, but the shower will be at its strongest peak on the night of January 3 to 4.

As quoted by the outlet, Sheeraz Ahmad Awan, General Manager of Dubai Astronomy Group, said, “This will be visible from anywhere in the UAE; all you need is a dark location and you should be able to see it.”

“We have been a tad bit unlucky with the meteor showers over the last few months,” he added, “because one of the biggest light pollutants of the night sky is the moon, and on that day, the moon will be rising later in the night.”

Meteors are nothing but pieces of debris that enter our planet’s atmosphere and can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per second.
