https://emiratitimes.com/ :For many people in the UAE, wellness is no longer limited to gym sessions, medical appointments or occasional health goals. It is becoming part of everyday routines, from walking and healthier food choices to mental well-being, outdoor activities and community programs.
The changing idea of wellness reflects a wider shift in how health is viewed across the UAE. Physical activity remains important, but well-being now covers several parts of daily life. Sleep, nutrition, mental health, social connection and the environment around people are increasingly being considered together.
The UAE Government’s National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031 has placed quality of life at the center of its approach. The strategy covers individuals, society and the country. Its objectives include encouraging healthy and active lifestyles, supporting good mental health and strengthening family ties. The strategy also includes 90 supporting initiatives across more than 40 priority areas.
Healthy choices become easier
Abu Dhabi has taken a similar approach through its Healthy Living Strategy. Developed under the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the strategy focuses on physical activity, diet and nutrition, awareness and knowledge. Sleep and mental well-being are also identified as important factors.
The strategy is designed to make healthier choices easier to adopt in everyday settings. More than 20 initiatives were approved during its initial phase. By February 2026, Healthy Living was overseeing 25 strategic initiatives aimed at encouraging sustainable behavior change and making healthier choices more accessible to citizens and residents.
Some of these efforts have focused on places where people already spend much of their time. The expansion of the SEHHI program, for example, is supporting access to healthier food options in workplaces. The approach moves preventive health beyond hospitals and clinics and into ordinary routines.
Cities are becoming part of wellness
The design of cities can influence how easily people include healthy habits in their daily routines. Parks, beaches, walking paths and community spaces can encourage movement and outdoor activities without requiring a gym membership.
1- More access to nature: Dubai’s Blue and Green Spaces Roadmap 2030 aims to expand access to natural environments across the city.
2- More active spaces: The roadmap includes plans for additional beach facilities and longer walking, jogging and cycling tracks.
3- Healthier daily routines: Better access to outdoor spaces can make walking, cycling and other forms of physical activity easier to include in everyday life.
4- Wellness beyond exercise: The approach connects physical activity with social interaction, outdoor living and overall quality of life.
5- Urban design and well-being: The growing focus on green and active spaces shows how city planning can support healthier lifestyles alongside other wellness initiatives.
Fitness becomes community activity
Dubai Fitness Challenge has also helped make physical activity more visible in everyday life. The initiative began with a simple 30-minute-a-day commitment for 30 days. Over time, it has developed into a citywide program involving people of different ages and fitness levels.
The 2025 edition attracted more than 3 million participants. Activities were spread across Fitness Villages, community hubs and different parts of the city. The program included walking, cycling, yoga and other activities that could be adapted to different abilities and interests.
The 10th edition will run from October 31 to November 29, 2026. The initiative has attracted more than 16 million participants across its first nine editions. Its growth shows how wellness can become a shared community experience rather than an individual pursuit.
Mental well-being gains attention
Wellness is also expanding beyond physical health. Mental well-being is becoming a more visible part of public health planning in the UAE, with services and programs designed to provide support before problems become more difficult to manage.
In Dubai, Dubai Health, the Community Development Authority and the Dubai Health Authority introduced the Itma’en service in March 2026. The service provides confidential mental well-being guidance through a dedicated hotline and is available to citizens, residents and visitors.
Abu Dhabi is also developing a broader mental health ecosystem. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi reported in August 2026 that the number of mental health professionals had increased by 81 percent since 2022. Mental health services have also been integrated into Primary Care Centers.
These developments show how wellness is increasingly being viewed as a combination of physical and emotional health. Seeking support is becoming part of the wider conversation about maintaining quality of life.
Longevity becomes new focus
The UAE’s wellness landscape is also moving towards longevity. In Dubai, the Dubai Longevity Authority has entered its implementation phase after approval of its strategy and operating budget in September 2026.
The authority is focused on the Longevity, Wellness and Advanced Health sector. Its approach centers on helping people live longer in good health rather than simply extending lifespan.
This reflects a wider change in the meaning of wellness. The focus is shifting from short-term goals such as losing weight or improving fitness to long-term questions about how people can maintain health, independence and quality of life across different stages of life.
Everyday wellness enters daily routines
The UAE’s growing wellness culture is therefore not built around one activity or one industry. It brings together food, movement, sleep, mental health, public spaces, community life and preventive healthcare.
For residents, that can make wellness feel less like a separate task and more like part of ordinary life. A morning walk can become a routine. A healthier meal can become an everyday choice. Time outdoors can become part of a family weekend. Mental wellbeing can become a subject people feel more comfortable discussing.
As the UAE continues to develop its health and quality-of-life programs, the idea of wellness is likely to become even more closely connected with how people live, work and spend their free time. The direction is clear: healthy living is moving beyond the gym and into the design of everyday life.
