One of the largest living reptiles in the world has a new home and it is right at the National Aquarium in Abu Dhabi.
Super Snake, believed to be the largest living snake in the world, is a 14-year-old female reticulated python, that will be slithering her way at the National Aquarium at Al Qana.
Reticulated pythons are the longest snake breeds in the world, commonly reaching more than 6.25 meters long, with the largest yet recorded to be 10 meters and at seven meters long, Super Snake is one of the largest on display in the world.
Weighing about 15kg, it took 12 people to hold her at full length. The snake will live in the Flooded Forest Zone along with more than 8,000 fascinating rainforest creatures.
Native to South and Southeast Asia, the reticulated python is the world’s longest snake. They kill their prey by wrapping around and constricting them. The jaws are also connected by very flexible ligaments, that allow them to stretch around large prey and swallow them whole. They are feared mainly due to their size and are among the few snakes that can prey on humans.
Though they’ve been known to be maneaters, the one at the museum was born in a Los Angeles captive breeding programme and she has grown familiarised with human contact during her 14 years as a private specimen.
“While Super Snake is a captive-bred animal, we as her caretakers still need to be vigilant and cautious around her. We can’t wait for the public to meet her and enjoy her slightly quirky personality. We are also excited about having this opportunity to educate our visitors as that is essentially why she is here,” shared Beatriz Maquieira, the curator at The National Aquarium.
The National Aquarium is part of Al Qana, a new waterfront destination in the capital and visitors will soon be able to meet Super Snake in her lush, tropical-inspired habitat.
