Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is poised to commence widespread layoffs this week. According to a report by Reuters, notifications will be dispatched to employees beginning today.

Internal communications acquired by Reuters indicate that the company will also expedite the recruitment of machine learning engineers concurrently. The layoffs are expected to impact numerous countries, including the United States.

However, employees in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will be exempt from these layoffs due to local labor laws. Conversely, staff in over a dozen other nations across Europe, Asia, and Africa will receive their notifications between February 11 and February 18.

Meta has previously announced its intention to reduce its workforce by approximately 5 percent, focusing on "lowest performers," with some roles anticipated to be refilled.

The company has characterized these reductions as “performance terminations,” a term initially reported by The Information. Unlike earlier rounds of layoffs, Meta has opted to keep its offices operational on Monday and will refrain from providing additional information regarding these decisions, as stated in a memo from Janelle Gale, Meta’s Head of People.
